  1. A sythesizer is a device that uses electrical 
  2. components to produce sounds. In preset 
  3. synthesizers, the sound of various 
  4. instruments is produced by a built-in 
  5. computer-type memory. In programmable 
  6. synthesizers any number of new instrumental 
  7. or other sounds may be produced at the will 
  8. of the performer. Speech synthesizers can 
  9. break down speech into 128 basic elements 
  10. (allophones), which are then combined into 
  11. words and sentences, as in the voices of 
  12. electronic teaching aids.
